What if jazz and Creole culture were one and the same? That is the belief of Xavier Belin, a pianist, composer and arranger from Martinique, named ‘Revelation’ by Jazz Magazine for his debut album *Pitakpi*. For the fifth edition of Pléonasme, he brings his trio to the stage of the Baiser Salé, a jazz club in the Les Halles district of Paris.

Pléonasme: a musical no-brainer

The title says it all: to speak of Creole jazz is almost a pleonasm. Born of cross-fertilisation, transmission and cultural fusion, jazz is, by its very nature, a Creole music. Through a repertoire of standards drawn from Creole regions – from Martinique to Haiti, from Réunion to Trinidad – Xavier Belin highlights the deep connections between these cultures and the history of jazz.

For this edition, the project reinvents itself as a trio featuring piano, double bass and drums: the ensemble playing, the pulse and the rhythmic heritage take on a new dimension. A living, evolving music that is passed on just as much as it is transformed.

The trio

  • Xavier Belin: piano, lead
  • Mauricio Congiu: double bass
  • Tilo Bertholo: drums
