Gwo Ka is a musical style that originated in Guadeloupe. Mainly played on drums called "ka", song and dance are also an integral part of its identity.
Revisited in 1969 by musician Gérard Lockel, it takes the form of Gwo Ka Modèn, and adds brass instruments and guitar to its composition, as well as a precise scale that must be respected.
The "Lockel & Gwo-Ka Modèn Explorations" project pays homage to this history, a music that is a national symbol, a tool for decolonising musical thought through modal and atonal music based on the science, swing and musical feeling of traditional gwo-ka.
Led by pianist Ruddy Boa, a pupil of Laurent Coq and artistic director of singer Körinn Pierre-Fanfan, the project explores a selection of Gérard Lockel's compositions, texts and speeches on the seven rhythms of gwo-ka.
