A world of possibilities unfolds to the beat of the drums. Maranhão jazz asserts itself as a unique voice – both deeply rooted and modern – in this jam session led by Isaías Alves.
A native of São Luís in north-eastern Brazil, Isaías is a percussionist and composer inspired by the folk traditions of Maranhão. He grew up to the beat of street drums, processions and festivals, before taking his music on a journey to Europe. With him, tradition meets improvisation, jazz takes root in the local landscape and rhythm becomes a language.
Inspired by the greats of Maranhão – Tânia Maria, João do Vale, Papete, Josias Sobrinho, César Teixeira – and by the giants of the Nordeste such as Letieres Leite, Sivuca, Hermeto Pascoal and Naná Vasconcelos, Isaías forges bridges between memory and invention.
Here, every jam session is unique. Come and listen, feel the rhythm, improvise, and let yourself be surprised. The drums have already begun to speak.
