#A chat with ISAÏAS ALVÈS – “ENCHANTEMENT”

“Enchantement” is an original musical show by Isaías Alves that blends Afro-Maranhão and indigenous rhythmic traditions with the contemporary language of Afro-diasporic jazz and post-modal structures. The work is the result of more than twenty years of research into the cultural expressions of Maranhão, such as the bumba meu boi, the Divino Espírito Santo festivals and practices of Afro-Maranhense origin, transposed into a contemporary instrumental language.

A native of São Luís, in north-eastern Brazil, Isaías is a percussionist and composer inspired by the folk traditions of Maranhão. He grew up to the rhythm of street drums, processions and festivals, before taking his music on a journey to Europe. With him, tradition meets improvisation, jazz takes root in the local landscape, and rhythm becomes a language.
