After almost two decades of musical complicity, Mario Canonge and Michel Zenino are relaunching their famous residency at Baiser Salé, like a ritual awaited every Wednesday by a loyal and passionate audience. This unique duo of piano and double bass has succeeded in imposing a format that is as demanding as it is intense, without artifice or compromise, where every note and every silence counts. The absence of drums, far from being a constraint, becomes a playground where concentration, mutual listening and sensitivity reach their peak. On stage, Canonge, a key figure in Caribbean jazz, and Zenino, a double bassist with a frighteningly precise phrasing, inventively revisit the great jazz standards - from Thelonious Monk to Ornette Coleman - while infusing them with their Creole and Latin roots and their taste for crossbreeding.
This residency, a veritable laboratory for improvisation, blends tradition and modernity in a rare form of alchemy, nurtured by years of uninterrupted musical dialogue. Returning to these evenings is like plunging into a suspended moment, where technical mastery fades into the background in favour of raw emotion and the shared moment. It's a not-to-be-missed event for fans of lively, free, embodied jazz.
